Fourteen Russian nationals were indicted for fraud and fraud conspiracy.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) unsealed three separate federal jurisdictions, revealing that 14 Russian nationals have been indicted for their involvement in cyberattack schemes. The disparate groups plotted to use and successfully deployed Trickbot, a malware, and Conti, a ransomware, against critical institutions like local governments, hospitals, and school districts.
Trickbot was used to open computers up to a number of viruses, and then Conti was sent in to steal critical information and tens of millions of dollars from more than 900 victims worldwide.
“Today’s announcement shows our ongoing commitment to bringing the most heinous cyber criminals to justice – those who have devoted themselves to inflicting harm on the American public, our hospitals, schools, and businesses,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray.
